Indra Shrine, located in Yamagata Prefecture, is one of Japan's oldest shrines dedicated to the Shinto deity Inari Okami, the patron kami of rice and fertility. The shrine complex includes a beautiful torii gate, a large hall with three-story pagoda, and many vermilion-colored buildings. Visitor tip
When visiting, make sure to participate in the daily shrine purification ritual (misogi) before approaching the torii gate, and then receive a prayer scroll with sacred amulets called 'ema' from the shrine staff.

Inari Shrine is famous for its fox spirits known as 'inari okami,' which are believed to bring good luck and prosperity. The shrine also hosts a festival in July, where locals pray for bountiful harvests and participate in traditional dances and performances.
Historical note
The shrine was established in the Heian period (794-1185 CE) by Emperor Saga, who worshipped Inari Okami as a guardian deity of his empire.
