Cultural notes
Mt. Zao is said to be the dwelling place of the Oni, a fearsome yōkai (supernatural creature) from Shizuoka folklore. The shrine's mythology connects it to the local legend of the 'Oni no Ouchi', a mythical cave said to contain the spirit of Mt. Zao.
