Dayotsu-jinja Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in the city of Echizen, Fukui Prefecture. Dedicated to Otohime, the goddess of the sea and islands, as well as Okuninushi, the god of agriculture and fertility. The shrine's architecture reflects its historical significance during the Nara period, featuring a wooden torii gate and traditional Shinto buildings.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes

The shrine is famous for its connection to the legendary island of Nausha, said to be Otohime's birthplace. According to myth, Otohime descended from the heavens and took refuge in this sacred place.

Founded in 748 AD by Emperor Shōmu.
