Visitor tip
To experience the shrine's unique charm, visit during cherry blossom season (late March to early April) and participate in the traditional sake-making ceremony at the adjacent sake brewery.
Cultural notes
Dayutsuji Shrine is famous for its beautiful garden design, inspired by the traditional Japanese landscape of 'yokocho' (alleyway). The shrine's torii gate is adorned with a distinctive wooden beam, symbolizing the connection between heaven and earth. During New Year's (Oshogatsu) festivities, shrine visitors are given special prayer beads called 'tassel-like ornaments' to ward off evil spirits.
Historical note
Founded in 1645 during the Edo period, Dayutsuji Shrine was built by the local lord, Matsudaira Tadakuni.
