Hachiman shrines are among the most numerous in Japan, dedicated to the deified Emperor Ojin who became the Shinto god of war, culture, and divine protection. Originally a syncretic Buddhist-Shinto deity, Hachiman was particularly revered by the samurai class and is considered a protector of Japan.
