Tsukishima Shrine is closely associated with the mythology of Kanagawa Prefecture, where it is said that the god of the sea, known as Kanezaki no Kamikaze, granted the land fertility in exchange for human sacrifices. The shrine also hosts an annual Cherry Blossom Viewing Festival (Hanami) to celebrate the arrival of spring.

Historical note

The shrine was originally established in the Heian period (794-1185 CE) as a small shrine dedicated to the god of the sea.
