Visitor tip
To make a wish at the shrine, approach the torii gate and bow deeply. Then, pass through the gates and tie an ema with your prayer written on it, leaving it for the kami to carry to the heavens.
Cultural notes
Akakawa-dera is famous for its numerous fox shrines, which are a unique aspect of Inari worship. The shrine's many vermilion torii gates represent the fox god Inari Okami and are said to ward off evil spirits. During the autumnal equinox festival (Aki Matsuri), visitors can enjoy traditional performances and food stalls.
Historical note
Originally built in the 8th century during the Nara period, the shrine's wooden structure was rebuilt multiple times due to fires and natural disasters throughout its history.
