Ikazuchi Jinja is a Shinto shrine located in the town of Kamo in Shizuoka Prefecture, dedicated to the kami of thunder, lightning, and storms. The shrine's name, Ikazuchi, refers to the kami of the heavens and the god of lightning, Inari Okami's brother, Karasu-taka no Kami. The shrine is famous for its impressive torii gate and unique architectural style. According to local legend, the shrine was built by the emperor Kinmei in 594 CE, during the Nara period.

Visitor tip
To avoid the rain, visit Ikazuchi Jinja early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the sun is not too strong. The shrine's torii gate can be easily damaged by sunlight and rain.
Cultural notes
Ikazuchi Jinja is closely associated with the mythology of Inari Okami, a Shinto god of rice, fertility, and prosperity. The shrine also hosts an annual festival in honor of Karasu-taka no Kami, the patron deity of lightning, which features traditional performances and food stalls.
