Located in the city of Mietsuka, Chiba Prefecture, Hachiman Shrine is one of Japan's oldest and most revered Shinto shrines. Dedicated to the god of war, Hachiman, it is said to have been built in 711 CE during the Nara period. The shrine complex features a majestic main hall, Tatamisato, as well as several smaller shrines and temples. Visitors can explore the shrine grounds, including the sacred Hachiman no o-torii gate, which is said to be one of the oldest and most beautiful gates in Japan.

Visitor tip
When visiting Hachiman Shrine, visitors are advised to remove their shoes before entering the main hall and to respect the traditional Japanese toilet facilities available on site.
Cultural notes
Hachiman Shrine is closely associated with the legend of Hachiman no Okappiki, a famous mythological figure said to have traveled from Mikage-jima Island to search for his father. The shrine also hosts several important festivals throughout the year, including the annual Hachiman Matsuri, which takes place in May.
