To make a wish for love, tie a red string (tama) to the lanterns hanging from the shrine's roof.

Cultural notes

Atago is one of the few Shinto shrines dedicated to the kami of love and matchmaking. During the Atago Matsuri festival, people dress up in traditional costumes and participate in games and competitions to attract a romantic partner. The shrine is also known for its unique 'love shrine' section, where devotees can write their names on wooden tablets and hang them on the pillars.

Historical note

The current main hall was built in 1729 during the reign of Tokugawa Ienari.
