Three Deities Shrine, a Shinto shrine dedicated to the three deities Hachiman, Okuninushi, and Susanoo. Located in Gunma Prefecture, it is one of Japan's oldest shrines, dating back to the Nara period (710-794 CE). Visitor tip
To make a meaningful offering, bring a box of rice balls called 'chankonabe', a specialty of the shrine, and leave them at the designated area.
Cultural notes
The shrine is famous for its unique tradition of using 'shinmei-iri' to purify visitors before they approach the main hall. Visitors must walk around the outside of the shrine three times while bowing to cleanse themselves of impurities.
Historical note
Built during the Heian period (794-1185 CE) in honor of the three deities who were believed to have created Japan's first emperor, Jimmu.
