Gunma

Located in the city of Nikko, Gunma Prefecture, Hōdo Shrine is dedicated to Fujin, the god of wind and storms. As a Shinto shrine built during the Edo period (1603-1868), it showcases traditional Japanese architecture with its vermilion torii gate and ornate wooden structures. Visitors can explore the shrine's peaceful grounds and admire its beautiful gardens.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes

As one of Japan's Three Great Shrines dedicated to Fujin, Hōdo Shrine is also believed to be the site where Fujin performed a miracle by calming the sea off the coast of Nikko. Visitors can see the shrine's large stone monument commemorating this event.

Historical note

Built in 1615 by Ii Naomasa, a loyal daimyo of the Tokugawa shogunate.
