Located in the heart of Tokushima, Shōgaku-ji Temple is a historic Shinto shrine dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu Ōmikami and the god of wisdom, Sugawara no Michizane. The temple's architecture reflects its origins as a humble shrine dating back to the Heian period (794-1185 CE). Its main hall, the Hondo, features a striking vermillion roof and a wooden stage for traditional performances. Visitors can explore the surrounding forest, which is said to be inhabited by various yōkai, including the fox spirit Inari Okami, who is also enshrined at the temple.

Cultural notes
Shōgaku-ji Temple is famous for its connections to Tokushima's rich folklore. According to legend, the temple's current Hondo was built on the site of an earlier shrine that was destroyed by a fire. The temple also houses several important cultural artifacts, including a large stone statue of Amaterasu Ōmikami.

The temple was rebuilt in 1602 CE after being damaged in a tsunami.
