金比羅神社

Shimane

Located in the city of Matsue, Gold Pavilion Shrine is dedicated to the Shinto deity Susanoo-no-Mikoto and Inari Okami. The shrine's current architecture is based on a design from the Kamakura period. Its name refers to the gold-colored roof tile that adorned its original wooden structure.

Cultural notes

Susanoo-no-Mikoto is a storm god and Inari Okami is a rice god. Gold Pavilion Shrine is also famous for its unique architectural feature: a bronze statue of Susanoo no Mikoto riding a boar, which symbolizes purification and strength.

Gold Pavilion Shrine was first established in 1198, during the Kamakura era.
