Cultural notes
As one of Japan's oldest shrines, Upper Shrine is steeped in mythology and legend. According to Shinto myth, Susanoo-no-Mikoto was said to have been exiled to the island of Yakushima after a dispute with his sister Amaterasu. The shrine's design reflects this connection, with its main hall dedicated to the storm god.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt after a devastating earthquake in 1970.
