Meso-sha Izumigami Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in the city of Okayama,Okayama Prefecture. The shrine is dedicated to the god of disease and illness, Izumigami. It is known for its unique architecture and historical significance as one of the oldest shrines in Japan. According to legend, the shrine was founded by Emperor Tenji and his wife, Empress Gemmei, who prayed for their son's recovery from a deadly illness.

Visitor tip
Visit during cherry blossom season (late March to early April) to see the beautiful blooming trees surrounding the shrine.
Cultural notes
Izumigami is a kami associated with epidemics and disease. The shrine is also known for its unique architectural style, which features a large torii gate made of iron. During the Edo period (1603-1868 CE), the shrine was famous for its healing properties and people would come from all over to pray for good health.
