Temple Tomoe no Okami, also known as Tomoe Shrine, is a Shinto shrine located in Okayama Prefecture. It is dedicated to the god of war and agriculture, Tomoe no Okami. The shrine's architecture and grounds are a testament to traditional Japanese design, with a large torii gate and a beautiful garden. The shrine is believed to have been established during the Heian period (794-1185 CE), and its primary deity is Tomoe no Okami.

Visitor tip

For visitors, it's recommended to ring the bell at the shrine gate three times for good luck before entering the grounds.

Cultural notes

Tomoe Shrine is known for its association with the famous Japanese warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune, who was said to have received divine guidance from Tomoe no Okami before his victory at the Battle of Dan no Ura. The shrine also hosts an annual festival in May, where visitors can enjoy traditional games and performances.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt in 1603 after being destroyed by lightning.
