Located in the Saga Prefecture, the Shinto shrine of Saigū-ji is known as the White Peak Shrine (Shirogatsunomiya). Dedicated to the mythological deity Ōnigoshima, it is believed to be one of the oldest shrines in Japan and has been designated a National Cultural Treasure. The shrine is famous for its beautiful white thatched roof, which is said to resemble a mountain peak.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes
Ōnigoshima is believed to be the god of storms, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions. At White Peak Shrine, visitors can participate in the annual Ōnigishima matsuri festival in October, which features traditional dances, music, and offerings to honor the deity.
