Cultural notes

Karatsu Shrine is closely associated with the mythology of the sea god, Ryujin. During the annual Karatsu Festival in May, visitors can participate in traditional dances and play a game of 'Kabocha Tsurai' (pumpkin throwing), which is believed to ward off evil spirits.

Historical note

Founded during the Heian period (794-1185), Karatsu Shrine was later rebuilt during the Kamakura period (1185-1333).
