Cultural notes
Watatsumi Shrine is one of the few Shinto shrines dedicated solely to a sea god. In Japanese mythology, Watatsumi is said to have been awakened by the sound of weeping girls from the Aso caldera in Kyushu, and he later fell in love with them.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt after its original structure was destroyed during World War II.
