As a symbol of Nagasaki's unique cultural identity, 十十六天神社 is also connected to the legend of Tsukimi, a goddess of the moon who was said to have appeared to the city's founder, Hasekura Tadatoshi, in a vision. The shrine's design incorporates elements inspired by Chinese astronomy and astrology.
Historical note
Founded in 1633 by Tokugawa Iemitsu, the shrine was built to honor the god of the heavens and to promote peace and prosperity for the city of Nagasaki.
