Kyūin-miyajō is a Shinto shrine located in Hyogo Prefecture, dedicated to the kami of the forest and the sea. The shrine's name translates to 'wooden plane palace.' It is believed to have been established during the Nara period (710-794 CE), although its exact date is unknown. Over time, the shrine has undergone several transformations, with significant renovations taking place during the Edo period (1603-1867 CE). Today, Kyūin-miyajō remains a significant cultural and historical site in Hyogo Prefecture.

Visitor tip

To appreciate the shrine's traditional architecture, visit during the cherry blossom season (late March to early April) and admire the beautiful plum blossoms that bloom in late winter to early spring.

Cultural notes

As a forest-dwelling kami shrine, Kyūin-miyajō is associated with the mythology of the forest spirit, a powerful entity believed to reside within the woods. During the Obon festival, which honors the spirits of one's ancestors, offerings are made to the forest spirit at this shrine.

Historical note

Kyūin-miyajō was an important center for the worship of the Sun Goddess Amaterasu during the Nara period.
