Toshigaya Hikoboshi-taijinsha, a Shinto deity associated with the spirit of a young man who was killed in an accident and is said to travel between the mortal world and Yama no Okami's (Yamunakamura) underworld every night, stopping at Toshigaya to rest before continuing his journey. In Gunma Prefecture, this shrine honors Hikoboshi and its primary deity.

Visitor tip
Visit the shrine at dusk, when lanterns are lit to guide Hikoboshi's spirit through the area, and bring an incense stick as an offering to commemorate his journey.
Cultural notes
Each year on the autumnal equinox (Hinamatsuri), visitors come to honor the spirits of children who have passed away. The shrine is known for its beautiful gardens and a statue of Hikoboshi holding a lantern, symbolizing the light that guides him through the mortal world.

The shrine was established in 1762 during the Edo period, after a local legend about Hikoboshi began to spread.
