Located in the town of Matsue, Productivity Shrine is dedicated to the Shinto deity, Kanezaki-Okami, who is believed to be patron of agriculture and fishing. Visitor tip
Visitors can try their luck at the shrine's 'fish toss' game, where they are given a small wooden fish and a bamboo pole. They must then toss the fish into a designated net in order to win a prize!
Cultural notes
Kanezaki-Okami is often invoked for its power over fishing and agriculture. In Mino province (now part of Shimane prefecture), Kanezaki-Okami was considered an important deity during the Heian period.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt after being destroyed during the Boshin War, a civil war fought from 1868 to 1869.
