庚申塔

Aomori

Located in the city of Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture's Heinei Taisha shrine is dedicated to the Shinto deities of rice, prosperity, and good harvests, with a primary focus on Inari Okami and Benzaiten. As one of Japan's oldest shrines, it boasts an impressive wooden architecture dating back to the 7th century, featuring a distinctive shōen (shrine village) layout. The shrine complex also includes several traditional shops and stalls selling local specialties.

Visitor tip

To fully appreciate the shrine's architecture, try visiting during cherry blossom season ( late March to early April), and take a stroll around the adjacent Heinei Taisha Shrine Village for a glimpse of traditional Japanese homes.

Cultural notes

The shrine is also famous for its annual Benzaiten Matsuri festival, which takes place in May. During this celebration, visitors can enjoy traditional performances, food stalls, and the opportunity to purchase amulets and talismans to ward off evil spirits.

Historical note

Established in 708 AD as a temple dedicated to En no Gyōja, it was later re-established as a Shinto shrine in 1713.
