Located in the heart of Akita Prefecture, Sanbutsu-sanja is a historic Shinto shrine dedicated to the three deities known as Sanbutsu. The shrine is nestled at the foot of Mount Sanbutsu, which is said to be the dwelling place of these three kami: Enma Daiō (God of Hell), Fūjin (Wind God) and Raijin (Thunder God). Visitors can explore the shrine's traditional wooden architecture and enjoy the scenic views of the surrounding mountains. The shrine is also famous for its beautiful cherry blossom trees.

Cultural notes
Sanbutsu-sanja is closely tied to the mythology of Akita Prefecture. According to local legend, the three deities Sanbutsu were once human warriors who lived in the area. They were later deified and became the kami of the shrine. Visitors can also explore the shrine's museum which houses a collection of artifacts related to Shintoism and Japanese folklore.
