Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is famous for its association with Sugawara no Michizane, a prominent court official during the Heian period. According to legend, Michizane was forced to flee Kyoto due to his loyalty to the emperor and ended up in Dazaifu, where he later became revered as a kami.
Historical note
The shrine was originally established in the 9th century as Tenmangu Shrine, dedicated to Michizane, but its current location in Dazaifu dates back to the 12th century.
