Nagasaki

Located in Nagasaki Prefecture, the Kokutenjinsha is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of prosperity and good fortune. The name 'Kokuten' means 'piano field,' as it was originally built beside an area where people used to play the shamisen and other traditional instruments, which was mistakenly translated as piano by early Western travelers.

Cultural notes

The Kokutenjinsha is connected to Nagasaki's maritime history, as its primary deity, Kokuten, was believed to have appeared to the city's founder, Tachibana Ginchiyo, guiding him in establishing a prosperous trade route. The shrine also hosts an annual festival (February) to honor the god of good fortune and prosperity.
