Located in the heart of Aomori Prefecture, Mutsu no Ma Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of the sea, Ryujin, and the god of fertility, Tsukiyomi. The shrine's name, 駒形神社, roughly translates to 'Horse-Shaped Shrine'. According to legend, the shrine was founded by a Japanese sailor who built a small boat in the shape of a horse, which miraculously carried him safely to the island where he later settled and established the shrine.
