Aomori

Dragon Shrine, located in Aomori Prefecture, is a Shinto temple dedicated to the dragon god Ryujin, revered as a symbol of good fortune and prosperity. The shrine's architecture reflects traditional Japanese design, with a rectangular main hall surrounded by verdant gardens and a pond featuring koi fish. Visitors can explore the shrine grounds, which also include several smaller shrines and monuments honoring other regional kami.

Visitor tip

To make an offering to Ryujin, tie a red string with your name on it to a wooden stake near the main torii gate, and pray for good luck and prosperity.

Cultural notes

Ryujin is also associated with water and fertility. During the annual Aomori Cherry Blossom Festival, shrine visitors can experience traditional dances and performances inspired by Ryujin's mythological connections.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt in the 17th century after a fire destroyed the original structure during the Sengoku period.
