Kamishima Shrine, located in the northern prefecture of Miyagi, is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of agriculture and prosperity, Ryujin. The shrine is famous for its beautiful autumn foliage and traditional architecture, with a history dating back to the Edo period (1603-1868).

Visitor tip
To fully appreciate the shrine's autumn foliage, visit during the second half of November when the maple trees turn vibrant red and orange.
Cultural notes
Kamishima Shrine is often associated with the legend of Ryujin, who was said to have granted fertility to the land in exchange for human offerings. The shrine's annual autumn festival, Toshogatsu, honors Ryujin and features traditional games and performances.
Historical note
The shrine was originally built in 1681 by the local daimyo, Date Masamune, as a temple dedicated to Ryujin.
