Aomori

Eightfold Temple, a Shinto shrine located in the city of Aomori Prefecture on the northernmost island of Honshu. Dedicated to the veneration of Amaterasu, the sun goddess and the kami of prosperity, protection, and good fortune.

Cultural notes

As an important site of Amaterasu worship, Eightfold Temple is also celebrated annually with the 'Hachimatsu-matsuri' festival, which honors the arrival of autumn. Visitors can admire traditional Japanese architecture and participate in the shrine's ceremonies, including the 'Matsuri-yaki' bonfire ritual.

Historical note

Founded in 1872 by Prince Naritaka Matsumae, Eightfold Temple was built as a substitute for the original temple destroyed during the Sengoku period.
