八幡神社

Miyagi

Located in the town of Kesennuma, Eight-Horned Shrine is dedicated to Amaterasu Ōmikami, the Shinto sun goddess and a major deity in the Japanese pantheon. The shrine's eight vermilion torii gates are said to represent the eight horns of the mythical creature Ryūjin, making it one of Japan's most unique shrines. The shrine complex features a wooden pagoda, stone lanterns, and intricately carved wooden beams.

Visitor tip

To get the best view of the vermilion torii gates, climb the stairs behind the main hall and look out from the top for stunning views of the surrounding area.

Cultural notes

As a major Shinto shrine, Eight-Horned Shrine is often visited during New Year's (Oshogatsu) celebrations to pray for good luck, prosperity, and health. The shrine also hosts an annual Kesennuma Cherry Blossom Festival, showcasing the beautiful beauty of its famous torii gates.
