Aomori

Located in Aomori Prefecture, the Inari Shrine is dedicated to Inari Okami, the Shinto deity of rice, fertility, and prosperity. As one of the most famous Shinto shrines in Japan, it is famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates that form a tunnel up the mountain, said to be the work of over 1,000 years of devotion from devotees who pray for good fortune and success.

Visitor tip

For a unique experience, try to visit during cherry blossom season (late March to early April) when the shrine is particularly beautiful and tranquil.

Cultural notes

The Inari Shrine is famous for its fox spirits, known as kitsune, which are often depicted in shrine mythology. The shrine also hosts the annual Inari Festival (May), where devotees pray for good fortune and success, and participate in traditional dances and rituals.

Historical note

The shrine was established in 718 CE by Prince Nagara no Okami, making it one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan.
