比沼麻奈為神社 is a Shinto shrine located in the western part of Kyoto, Japan. The shrine's name is derived from its original location by the Nakanoshima Pond, which was once a major wetland area. The shrine is dedicated to the kami, Fujinryu no Kami, the god of wind and clouds. The shrine complex features a distinctive three-story pagoda and an ornate wooden gate known as 'fusuma'.

Visitor tip
To respect the shrine, please refrain from taking photos inside the main hall and during festivals. Instead, capture beautiful shots of the surrounding gardens and structures.
Cultural notes
The shrine is famous for its association with the legend of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, a renowned samurai and regent of Emperor Go-Toba. According to myth, Yoshitsune was granted divine protection by Fujinryu no Kami before his death in 1189 CE.
Historical note
The shrine was founded during the Heian period (794-1185 CE), making it one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Kyoto.
