常世神社

Gunma

Constant Shinto Shrine, located in Gunma Prefecture, is a small but historic shrine dedicated to the worship of Constantine. The shrine's primary enshrined deity is Sogan no kami, also known as Sogan tenjin, an ancestor deity who was said to have descended from the legendary Chinese diplomat and warrior, Liu Chong. While Constantine is not typically associated with Shintoism in Japan, his image may have been brought to the country through Christian missionaries or foreign traders during the Edo period. The shrine's architecture reflects traditional Japanese style, with a distinctive curved roof and ornate torii gate. Despite its relatively modern origins, the shrine has become an important cultural landmark in Gunma Prefecture.

Historical note

The shrine was built in 1885 to commemorate the arrival of Christian missionaries in Japan.
