Located in the town of Agematsu, Gunma Prefecture, Dayo Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the kami Dayo Ō no Taka no Kami. The shrine is famous for its beautiful cherry blossom trees and ancient architecture. The shrine's main hall was built during the Edo period (17th-19th centuries), featuring a unique wooden pagoda-style roof. Visitors can see rare and historic artifacts, including samurai armor and lacquerware, in the shrine's museum.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes

Dayo Shrine is associated with the myth of Kiyotsura Ō no Kami, a powerful water spirit from Japanese mythology. During the spring festival, visitors can participate in traditional activities such as sake barrel racing and rice ball making, symbolizing the bounty of the harvest season.

Historical note

Founded in 1602 by Tokugawa Ieyasu's daimyō, the shrine has been rebuilt several times throughout its history due to fires and wars.
