Located in the heart of Dazaifu, Fukuoka Prefecture, Tanegashima Shrine is dedicated to the sea god Susanoo and the sun goddess Amaterasu. The shrine's current building dates back to 1633, but it is believed that the original shrine was constructed during the Heian period (794-1185). Tanegashima Shrine is famous for its beautiful gardens and traditional architecture. Cultural notes
Tanegashima Shrine is also famous for its connection to Japanese folklore, as it is said to be the place where Susanoo washed his feet after defeating the serpent Yatagarasu. The shrine's beautiful gardens are also said to be inspired by the mythological paradise of Izumo.
Historical note
The shrine was originally constructed as a Shinto shrine dedicated to Susanoo, but it later came under the control of the Buddhist temple Tenryu-ji, before being returned to Shinto ownership in 1633.
