猿田彦神社

Gunma

Located in the town of Asaka, Gunma Prefecture, 猿田彦神社 is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Hachiman Ōkami, the kami of war and messenger of the gods. The shrine is known for its impressive torii gate and traditional architecture, which reflect its historical significance as a military shrine. According to legend, Hachiman Ōkami was summoned by Emperor Kinmei in 593 CE to help him defeat his enemies. Today, visitors can explore the shrine's historic buildings, including the San no Irie (Three Gates) shrine hall and the Okuno-dono shrine, which houses the deity's sacred mirror. The shrine is also famous for its annual Hachiman Matsuri festival, which takes place in late May.
