Nishigatsumi Shrine, dedicated to Nishigatsumi Okami, is a Shinto shrine located in the town of Higashimatsushima, Miyagi Prefecture. The shrine is famous for its beautiful gardens and traditional architecture. According to local legend, Nishigatsumi Okami was a kami who protected the town from natural disasters, including tsunamis and floods. The shrine's architecture reflects the Heian period, with a main hall, or hon-do, built in 1334.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes
Nishigatsumi Shrine is known for its traditional festivals, including the annual Nishigatsumi Okami Festival, which honors the deity's protection of the town. The shrine also hosts a summer festival, called Tanabata, where visitors can write prayers on tanzaku papers and hang them on the shrine's vermilion torii gates.
