Tōkatsu Shrine in Aomori Prefecture is dedicated to the Sea God, Ryūjin, and the kami of the sea, such as Shio Kami (Salt Kami) and Tsumiko (Mother Salt). The shrine's architecture reflects its coastal location, with a vermilion torii gate and wooden shōden (main hall). Visitors can enjoy the beautiful ocean views from the shrine grounds. In Aomori City, there is another shrine called Tsutsukawa no Hara Shrine dedicated to Tsumiko.

Visitor tip
Bring a small gift of salt or sea food to offer to Shio Kami and Tsumiko as a gesture of respect for the sea gods.
Cultural notes
As a shrine dedicated to the Sea God Ryūjin, Tsutsukawa no Hara Shrine is connected to the mythology of the Ryūjin's ability to control the ocean. In Aomori Prefecture, salt was highly valued and used in various rituals and ceremonies.
Historical note
The current main hall was built in 1872 during the Meiji period, after a fire destroyed the previous structure.
