住吉龍神社拝殿

Aomori

Respectfully known as the residence of Fujin, the Wind God and one of the five elements' principal kami in Shinto, residing within the shrine's main hall, at 住吉龍神社拝殿 in Aomori Prefecture. The shrine is notable for its traditional architectural style reminiscent of ancient Nara period temples.

Cultural notes

The shrine is celebrated during 'Obon', a Buddhist holiday commemorating ancestors, in which local residents honor Fujin as a protector of the sea and fishermen's luck. The main hall showcases the importance of wind in Shinto mythology.

Historical note

Built in 1846 during the mid-Edo period, this shrine was originally known as 'Residence of Fujin'.
