Akakami Shrine, located in Akita Prefecture, is a historic Shinto shrine dedicated to the deity of lightning and thunder, known as Akakami-no-kami. The shrine's five-story main hall, or gaien, is adorned with vibrant vermilion lacquerwork and houses the enshrined kami. Visitors can pray for good weather, prosperity, and protection from lightning during the annual Akakami Shrine Festival, which takes place in June. The shrine's architecture reflects its origins as a rural temple, blended with traditional Shinto elements.

Visitor tip
To avoid getting struck by lightning, try to visit the shrine during the day or early evening when possible. Bring a small token, such as a pen or coin, and tie it to the wooden beam above the main hall's entrance for good luck and protection.

The shrine is famous for its unique architectural style, blending elements of Shintoism with Buddhist temple design. During the annual festival, visitors can participate in traditional dances and games, including a popular ritual where participants dressed in white robes carry a large lantern adorned with paper charms to ward off evil spirits.
