Dayahiko Takemoto Hachimangu Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of war and fertility located in the foothills of Mt. Tanigawa, in the town of Agematsu, Gunma Prefecture. Dedicated to the deity Hachiman, revered as the protector of the Imperial Army, the shrine has played an important role in Japanese history since its founding in 1603 by Tokugawa Ieyasu's general, Toyotomi Hideyoshi's loyal commander and regent, Tokugawa Iemitsu's trusted advisor, Tokugawa Mitsutsuna. The shrine is renowned for its impressive architecture, which reflects the traditional Heian period style, with a distinctive curved roofed honden and adjacent Shinden-zukuri building. Locals celebrate Hachiman Matsuri at the shrine to pray for good health, success in business, and a bountiful harvest.

Visitor tip
To fully appreciate the shrine's architecture, visit during the Hachiman Matsuri festival (late April to early May) when the surrounding area is beautifully decorated with traditional paper lanterns and torii gates.
Cultural notes
Hachiman, as a god of war, was often invoked by samurai warriors before battles. Locals still believe that visiting this shrine can bring good luck and protection in times of conflict or hardship.
