Kasuga Shrine in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan is dedicated to the Shinto deity Kasuga Okami, but the Enshriners are actually Kami of rich soil and water. The Enshrined Deities of Tonokawa Shrine include Tonogou Tsukuyomi and Otsuka no Okami. Tonokawa Shrine in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture is dedicated to three Shinto deities: Furihashi no Okami and the two twin Kami, Nigijinro and Wakasaginro. The shrines were built between 1630 and 1657 by daimyo Tokugawa Ietsugu in order to pray for the death of his enemies at sea. Tonokawa Shrine was built to pray for a good harvest and prosperity.

Visitor tip
To avoid long lines, visit during the off-season (April-May or September-October) and arrive early in the morning.
Cultural notes
Tonokawa Shrine has a unique architecture with a unique main hall that is dedicated to Furihashi no Okami, which is said to be able to bring good luck for fishermen and sailors.
Historical note
Built in 1634 as a memorial to Tokugawa Iemitsu's victory over Iesada in the sea battle of Shimonoseki.
