Cultural notes
According to legend, Kukai is said to have performed a ritual at this site to purify the waters of the nearby Mabuchi River. The temple also celebrates the annual Treasure Boat Festival (Zushi Matsuri), where intricately carved wooden boats are displayed on the riverbank.
Historical note
Established in 816 CE by Emperor Montoku, the temple was designated as an Important Cultural Property in 1951.
