Cultural notes
This shrine is dedicated to Otohime, the sea goddess and wife of Yamato Takeru, who was said to have brought peace to Japan. The shrine also holds an annual festival in June, celebrating the founding of Nagasaki city.
Historical note
The shrine was originally founded in 1585 by Shimazu Yoshihisa, the daimyo (feudal lord) of Kagoshima Domain, as a protective deity for the city of Nagasaki.
