奇鹿神社

Shimane

Located in the city of Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, Chikushi-jinsha Shrine is a historic Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of fortune and prosperity, Chikushi Tenjin. The shrine is famous for its beautiful vermilion torii gate, striking white pagoda, and serene gardens. The shrine complex has been extensively renovated over the centuries, reflecting various architectural styles from Nara period onwards.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes

Chikushi-jinsha Shrine is closely associated with the legend of Chikushin-no-Okami, a mythical deer said to have possessed supernatural powers. The shrine's patron deity, Tenjin, is also revered for his role in bringing about peace and prosperity.

Historical note

The shrine's current buildings date back to the Heian period (794-1185 CE), but it is believed to have originated during the Nara period.
