Five-So-Sou Shrine, located in the heart of Dazaifu city, is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of agriculture and fertility, Inari Okami. The shrine's history dates back to the Heian period (794-1185 CE), making it one of the oldest shrines in Fukuoka Prefecture.

Cultural notes

Five-So-Sou Shrine is closely associated with the nearby Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, another famous Shinto shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, a deity revered for his role in connecting heaven and earth. The two shrines share a common prayer hall and are often visited together.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt after its destruction during the Genroku era (1688-1704 CE).
