Located in the city of Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, Inari Shrine is one of Japan's most famous Shinto shrines and a symbol of the region. Dedicated to Inari Okami, the god of rice, fertility, and industry, the shrine is renowned for its thousands of vermilion torii gates that form a tunnel up the mountain. Visitor tip
For visitors, we recommend purchasing an 'omiyage' bag at one of the many shops nearby before ascending the mountain to avoid the long lines waiting for those without bags.
Cultural notes
In addition to its well-known torii gates, Inari Shrine is also famous for its 'hashi-oki' festival, which takes place in November. During this event, visitors can participate in a thrilling archery competition using specially designed bows and arrows.
Historical note
The shrine was originally constructed in 711 AD, during the Nara period, as a simple shrine dedicated to Inari Okami. Over time, it has undergone numerous renovations and expansions.
